Daniel was a prophet, no doubt - and none in the Jewish mind either. Jesus referred to the prophet (and prophecies of) Daniel in Matthew 24:15. There's no 'fault' in the book of Daniel being categorized in the Hebrew 'writings' as opposed to the Christian English 'major prophets' category.
The Hebrew categories are classified in terms of 'prophetic history.' They saw prophecy and history as parallels - God acting out his purpose in man's history. That's why 'former' and 'latter' prophets are listed chronologically.
Christian English categorization is more thematic and biographical. In the CE categorization major prophets are simply bigger books than 'minor' prophets.
The same Jesus who referred to Daniel the prophet seems to use the Hebrew categorization (the one his listeners would understand) in Luke 24:44.

Thanks for the lesson!
What do you make of the Lord naming Daniel as a prophet?
..does this illuminate a fault in the Hebrew classification of Daniel's prophecies as "writings" as opposed to "prophecies"?
